Evidence of humans

Not the greatest photo....but you get the gist.

This morning I really enjoyed Rosemary's post about a canal walk http://wherefivevalleysmeet.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/walk-in-valley-along-canal-towpath.html, and went for my own canal walk, from Hebden Bridge to Mytholmroyd, along the Rochdale canal.

As I had thought, spring isn't as advanced here as with Rosemary, but there was some evidence that it isn't too far away.

However, what I enjoyed most from my walk, were the images of how people have made their mark on this lovely place. From decorated boats, derelict mills, with their own special beauty, to stone walls,  canal side window displays and sheer architectural ingenuity.

only in Yorkshire.......

now...grandchildren, who do you think lives here ?

I love the gargoyle perched on top of this canal side window

My feet are in the reflection of this canal side window sill display

One of the canal side houses always has an interesting display...in the summer there are all manner of containers used to grow all sorts. I'm sure it will look better than this later in the season.

Thanks for the canal walk idea today Rosemary, I have loved it.

  1. Dear Janice - this is great fun, and thanks for the link. I love your take on the walk, we should do this again. I see some ideas there for your French pink shell bidet! - lovely.

    1. Thanks Rosemary, my walk did enable me to spot some gorgeous signs of spring. I was particularly taken with a large green toad that joined me for part of the journey. I realised as well that it will only be a couple of weeks before I am back in France, and the Canal du Midi will have to be explored. Thanks again. Janice

  2. I love 'Marge the Barge'. Feeling guilty that I spent 12 years in the UK and didn't visit Hebden Bridge.

    1. Yes, I thought Marge was particularly inventive....HB can be a quirky little place, apparently it is often used as a destination for mystery coach tours ! J.

  3. Hi Janice,
A great post with super pics. It's a while since I've been to Hebden Bridge so I've enjoyed my walk along the canal. We live on the Trent and Mersey canal in Staffordshire, so perhaps I'll follow your lead sometime soon and do a blog post on it! Will also read through some of your archive later.

  5. Gorgeous post, Janice. I love your photos of the quirkiness which is always there if we look for it. The mullioned windows and stone walls, as well as the derelict mills, take me back to my childhood home in Lancashire, where we also have place names ending in 'bottom' :-)

As I commented on Rosemary's post, I love canals and their towpaths, but have to drive 20 miles to find our nearest which is right out in the countryside with no architecture....

  7. I absolutely adore the Canals! As soon as you get out and breathe in the atmosphere, it's like travelling to another world. Your photos are perfect and really convey that special feeling.

    1. Thankyou, I really did enjoy the walk. It does seem like another world by the canal, despite the fact that it runs parallel with the main road through the valley, the rail line and the River Calder. All 4 methods of travelling through the Calder Valley side by side, but somehow, incredibly peaceful. J.

  8. This was so lovely, Janice, well, expect for Marge the Barge, which had me giggling. Don't you just love the sense of humor some folks have?

    1. Thats exactly right... the toilets with plants, the plastic rat, the cycle in the sky,and Marge the barge all lovely examples of people having fun, alongside natural beauty and the amazing original engineering and architectural wonders of the canal builders. J.

  10. I too really love the gargoyle. People have them in gardens, or on stone walls ( and on Churches of course), but I've never seen one just perched on top of a window. Thanks for calling in. J.
