Russians in Carcassonne

Taking my first official visitor to Carcassonne today, we came across one of those experiences that just make the day.

It was cold, windy and fairly damp, and we took refuge in the St Nazaire Basilica. Apart from the outstandingly beautiful 13th and 14th century rose windows, we were thrilled to discover the Doros choir. We sat, mesmerised . Warmed by the experience we continued with our touristy visit to the cite, found a lovely place for lunch and consumed a small carafe of red and revelled in the delight of these men's amazing voices.

Returning to Caunes, I looked up the choir's details and came across this link. It is of the choir some months ago, but captures exactly the experience that Sue and I had today, listening to the voices and gazing around us at the beautiful glass.

  1. Hello Janice:
Oh how magical this all must have been and what a delight fr you and your visitor. This day will surely stay in your memory for ever and will, we are certain have made a lasting impression upon your visitor, too.

The stained glass is glorious and would, we can well imagine, have been complemented most beautifully by those melodic Russian voices. Happy day!

    1. Hello J & L, yes, it was really magical....a good day, despite the unseasonal weather. I'm becoming a strong believer in Billy Connolly's view that there is no such thing as bad weather, just wrong clothes.

  5. There is very little in this world more inspiring and beautiful than medieval glass-- how wonderful that should should make such a wonderful and unexpected discovery.

Carcassonne is somewhere I have longed to go every since I first heard about it. Who knows maybe this year -- it's not so far from the Lot, after all!

    1. You must promise me if you get anywhere near Carcassonne during the year that you get in touch with me. Caunes is only 20 mins drive from Carcassonne. My advice, however, would not to try to see the cite in the height of the summer....the crowds are unbelievable. It would be great to meet up with you here though. J.

    1. It is good being able to show friends around this great part of the country, although I am realistic in recognising I may feel differently after showing dozens of visitors around Carcassonne. I'll probably get a good guide book and give it to them....and say meet you later ! J.

  7. Janice, what a fantastic combination of sound and architecture that must have been! I think they breed those basses specially in Russia, as I hear them in other Russian music I have. :-) Sorry your weather is so unseasonal too.

    1. The weather is a shame for visitors, but I know that later in the year I will probably yearn for a cool cloudy day....and there is something splendid about black glowery clouds and amazing architecture. The Russian choir was a real treat. Hope you're having a good birthday. J.

  8. Heavenly, Janice. How magnificent those windows must have been to see. Having grown up in the Eastern (Greek) Orthodox tradition, hearing these men was so comforting to me tonight. I would love to visit this basilica some day.

    1. It was beautiful and uplifting and I did end up buying one of their CDs....so although the space in my house in Caunes doesn't quite provide the accoustic marvels of the basilica, I can enjoy it again and again. J.

Every time you feel connected.
